What genre of music will you magazine cover?
The magazine will cover the genre hip hop, specifically looking at old school hip hop, 70's to 90's hip hop. I decided to choose this genre because hip hop music has become very large over the years, I wanted to understand how hip hop all started and have the readers understand the history of this genre that a lot of people are influenced by and like.
Who are the target audience?
I would say that both female and male aged 15+ can read the magazine because people at 15 can start to understand the lyrics in the music and people even there 40's still listen to hip hop. Who have an interest in the present hip hop as well as the past.
What is the name of your magazine?
The masthead must relate to hip hop culture in some way for the target audience to know that the magazine genre is hip hop. Some of the masthead I have come up with is Scratch, relating to DJing, Monstar; combination of monster and star, the urban word Homie or Homies because its used widely in hip hop.
What will your mast head look like?
The masthead will be in capital letters with a bold solid colour using a sans serif font. The reason for this is from what I have analysed from music magazine covers the typography of the masthead is sans serif with the letters in white. In addition having the letters of the masthead in capitals and a larger fonts size will make it stand out from the rest of the text.
What photography will be required?
I would either use a mid shot, close up or a full body shot. A mid shot conforms to what the main image in a magazine looks like, using this type of shot you are able to show what the person maybe wearing, this indicate the genre of music more than using a close up shot. On the other if I were to do photo of multiple artist for the cover I would use a full body shot, although some magazines use mid shot with a rang of hip hop artist, it seems as if they squashed the image to make it fit, where as full body shot doesn't. Not only a full body shot doesn't subvert, this has been used in magazines relating to hip hop such as XXL, The Source.
What mise-en-scene will be required?
The setting will be a plain white background that you find at a photo shoot because having a setting such a graffiti wall may not contrast well with the text or the main image. I want the main focus to be of the model/s.
With the model/s there costume will be clothing such a caps, chains, bandana ,track suits , including colours that is used to represent old school hip hop. Also their facial expression would be of them looking serious, their body language or pose for the photo they could cross their arms, do a B-boy stance or holding a microphone to make it look like they are emceeing while looking directly at the camera to stay with the conventions of cover.
What item/feature articles would be on your content page?
- The masthead on the content page.
- include sub images relating to the articles.
- Page numbers for where the articles are.
- Sub heading such as latest news, entertainment, fashion, editors page..
- Magazine website and issue date
-
What is the focus of your double page spread?
The focus will be of an interview of either an artist or a group relating to hip hop.
In the article the interview will talk about who they are, how they started, their inspirations and many other questions. The interview must have some sort of relation to old school hip hop .
What photography will be required?
- view point if the readers looking at the artist or group working.
- Either a low angled shot to show the their expression at a different angle.

Student Magazine Photo Shoot
Content page
This image is blurry because the lens wan't focused.
This images is a side view shot that has a clear view of what the person is doing.
The image is quite focussed, the objects in the image good be focussed more, to make the whole image clearer.
In this photo I decided to do a top shot of the person doing there work.
this image is clear, however the image is cut off on the side of his arm.
The image is quite dark due to the lighting, would've been easier to if it was taken somewhere brighter or to use the flash.
you can clearly see the shadow, which may take away some detail from the main image and looks unprofessional.
The photo is clear, you can see the details of the books, the table and the person clearly, however the image of the person wasn't in the centre it was taken a little more to the left.
There is also a shadow in this image which makes it unprofessional like.
